Charlottesville, Virginia, is home of the University of Virginia and also a regional governmental and economic hub. I visited the town over the summer. Later, in the fall, working from my field notes and new research, I found that commercial activity in the town has moved from point to point over the last two hundred years, in response to changes in social structure and transportation. This informational poster describes the town’s evolution. It contrasts a resident’s memories of the dead Main St. shopping area, ten years ago, with the same street’s vibrance today.
